The song posits that our wealthy, privileged leaders are not "out of touch" with common people, but rather take joy in watching them suffer. It describes the incomprehensible dichotomy of people who choose leaders who treat them poorly through a metaphor of depriving them of oxygen.

The verses use a lyrical device where the last word in one line is the same as the first word in the next line, with a different meaning. This results in a slight jolt and reset for the listener.
